It’s been almost thirty years since the Boston Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks battled in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Back then, fans were treated to one of the most captivating duels in NBA history with Larry “Legend” Bird and Dominique Wilkins both putting up double digits on the scoreboard.
Fast forward to this Saturday and fans across the country will see a very different style of basketball, one that is based on team collaboration and not one or two headline players.
Hawks vs. Celtics
Both teams are missing a particular level of star power that tends to push teams through the eliminating rounds and into the finals.
For the Hawks, this detail left them at the mercy of Lebron James and an otherwise weakened Cleveland Cavilers last year, despite leading the Eastern Conference in wins and beating the Cavs throughout the regular season.
For the Celtics, the same words ring true as the team is widely considered to be an organization that has everything but a seasoned leader/veteran.
Of course, both teams wouldn’t be in the position they are in if it wasn’t for a few positive characteristics that could propel one of them into an unexpected matchup against the dominating Spurs or Warriors. The Hawks are well-coached, focused, play team ball and rarely lose games because of mistakes. While the Hawks may not carry the same type of media buzz they generated in 2015, they are the more experienced team heading into the first round.
What to Expect
The Hawks can win this series if Jeff Teague takes over in the position of point guard and Kyle Korver is able to maintain momentum from the perimeter. When these two teams met on April 9, Teague scored a cool 24 points and stacked up five rounds, with seven assists.
For the playoffs, he will need to perform even better considering that if they win, they will most likely have to return to Cleveland where King James will be waiting.
