The Allman Brothers band played their final show on October 29th, 2014 in New York City. With a 45 year career under their belts, they decided it was time to hang their hats and stop touring.
The band was formed in the late 60’s by Duane Allman and Gregg Allman. Their third album, recorded in 1971, went gold. But sadly tragedy struck shortly after, as Duane Allman was involved in a motorcycle accident and died at the young age of 24. Gregg Allman decided to keep his older brother’s dream alive, and forged ahead. Though there was now only one brother, they kept the name and went on to become southern rock legends. Their album is still listed at #49 on Billboard’s 500 Greatest Albums chart.
Gregg Allman Keeps It Going
While the Allman Brothers have officially stopped touring, it seems that Gregg Allman was not quite ready to give up life on the road. He’s decided to take on the life of a solo artist, kicking off his tour on New Years’s Eve and playing shows through at least January. He has announced 11 tour dates so far:
- 12/31 — Atlanta, GA, Symphony Hall
- 1/3 — Ft. Myers, FL, Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Center
- 1/4 — Hollywood, FL, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
- 1/6 — Athens, GA, Georgia Theatre
- 1/7 — Athens, GA, Georgia Theatre
- 1/9 — Macon, GA, Grand Opera House
- 1/10 — Macon, GA, Grand Opera House
- 1/13 — Nashville, TN, Ryman Auditorium
- 1/14 — Nashville, TN, Ryman Auditorium
- 1/16 — Cherokee, NC, Harrah’s Cherokee
- 1/17 — Savannah, GA, Johnny Mercer Theatre
Gregg Allman is keeping the tour close to his roots, playing only dates in southern states. He ends his tour in Savannah, Georgia, which is just a stone’s throw from where he currently resides in Richmond Hill, Georgia. There’s no word yet on whether he will add more dates the the tour, but he has been added to the Coachella festival lineup in California for 2015.
The first date on his solo tour is New Year’s Eve, at the Atlanta Symphony Hall. For anyone looking to have a great time in Atlanta to ring in the new year, this could certainly be the concert to attend! Gregg Allman’s wonderfully soulful voice and brilliant keyboard and guitar skills are sure to delight fans. He is a living legend, and this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see him live. The show starts on Wednesday, December 31st at 9pm. The show is likely to sell out, but there are currently plenty of tickets left on the secondary market.
