The Braves are an Atlanta institution. With legends like Hank Aaron, Ted Turner, Bobby Cox and Chipper Jones, there has never been a shortage of talent associated with the team. With the postseason approaching, and Braves tickets becoming a hot commodity, here are 8 reminders that even when chips are down, the Atlanta Braves’ legendary comebacks are, well, legendary.
July 6, 1986
Braves’ first baseman Bob Horner became one of 15 players in the MLB to get four home runs in a game. Horner got three solo shots and a three-run homer in the fifth inning.
1991 Season
The Braves became the first team in MLB history to make it to the World Series the season after having the worst record in the league.This was also the season that the team set Atlanta records for wins (94) and attendance (2,140,217), while being named by Baseball America as the Organization-of-the-Year.
1992 Season
Sitting in last place with a 20-27 record in league play and seven games behind front-runner San Francisco, the Braves pulled out 21 wins in just 24 games. Included in this comeback run was a 13-game winning streak that tied the franchise record from 1982 and still stands as the record today, in addition to setting another franchise record for wins at 98.
May 10, 1994
The Braves turned it around against the Phillies with a 7-run comeback, forcing extra innings and eventually taking the W in the 15th inning.
1996 World Series
The 1996 World Series, held at Old Fulton County Stadium, saw St. Louis earn a 3-1 lead against the Braves. With the Cardinals just one win away from taking the title from the defending champions, the Braves staged a monumental comeback, outscoring the Cardinals 32-1 in the final three games. This impressive run was capped in game 7, which began with six runs in the first inning and ended in a 15-0 shutout for the Bravos.
September 24, 2004
A three-run eighth inning was a key component in an 8-7 comeback win against the Marlins that clinched the Braves’ 13th consecutive division title.
May 20, 2010
Down 9-3 against the Reds going into the ninth inning, the Braves staged a seven-run comeback in the ninth inning to take a 10-9 victory against Cincinnati. This run included a pinch-hit grand slam from Brooks Conrad.
August 19, 2014
Following a mid-season losing streak, Justin Upton went on a 10-game hitting streak, helping the Bravos win five consecutive games. One of those wins includes an 11-3 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates in which Upton went 2 for 4 with five RBI, and hit his 24th home run.
