Atlanta’s Best Sports Fans
We recently reached out to a number of our friends to learn more about their thoughts on Atlanta’s sports scene and its ongoing evolution as a destination mecca within the U.S.
Last month, we spoke to James Moore who produces the “Y Radio” program at the YMCA Metro North location.
Today, we have the pleasure of hearing from a member of the Channel 2 Action News team Nefertiti Jáquez.
Here is what she had to say:
1. Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island but I’ve lived in some pretty great sports towns. Miami, Houston, Philly and now Atlanta.
2. Did you grow up as a sports fan? If so, who were your favorite teams?
I grew up playing volleyball and dancing. As far as professional sports went, I rooted for the Boston teams.
3. What do you think is the best thing going on right now with Atlanta’s sports scene?
I think the Falcons are playing well. Obviously in first place despite losing some close games. The offense can be special once they get it all together.
4. What do you think about Atlanta’s fan base, what do you think could be done to improve participation when it comes to The Braves or the upcoming debut of Atlanta’s MLS soccer team?
From what I’ve seen in the short time I’ve been here, the fans want to win.
Obviously the Braves had a tough year but with some promising young players, they have the ability to be exciting. I think that could be enough to get fans motivated.
As far as soccer goes, I hope it takes off. Soccer matches are exciting and fans really get into them. I’m curious to see how Atlanta embraces it.
5. After a less-than-stellar season, what do you think about the Braves new stadium? Do you think the new location will attract more fans?
Anytime there’s a new stadium there’s a buzz.
I hope it not only attracts fans, but keeps them coming back. I know I’m looking forward to checking it out. I’m not too sure about the new location. It’s all new to me.
6. What are your thoughts on the Atlanta Braves 2016 draft pick, taking on 18-year-old Ian Anderson from Clifton Park, NY?
Like I said earlier, I’m a New Englander so I’m not allowed to root for anything from New York but I’ll make an exception for the kid. He’s young and there will be a lot of expectations being drafted that high.
I think we will have to wait and see and trust that the farm system will groom him for the big leagues.
7. Did you attend any games this summer? If so, who did you see play?
Unfortunately, with just moving here and getting settled, I did not get a chance to catch a game. Now that I am getting to know my way around town, I’m sure I’ll catch a Hawks and Falcons game.
8. What do you think about the upcoming NFL season?
I’m a Patriots fan so I am pumped to see them make another run at the Super Bowl. I want to see Brady get a fifth ring.
9. How do you think the Atlanta Falcons will perform?
The Falcons are playing well!
The division is weak so there is some wiggle room. They are clearly the best team in the South and are gonna be playoff bound.
I just hope they catch fire and assure us a home playoff game or two.
10. What are your thoughts on the new Mercedes Benz stadium? How do you think it will affect Atlanta’s economy? Do you think it will attract the World Cup to Atlanta?
I think it is going to be great. It looks amazing and has already landed a Super Bowl and college football National Championship game. That means a shot in the arm for the economy.
We will host fans from all over the world for these events. It will be a great chance to show off. I absolutely think Atlanta can handle the World Cup and I am really looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.
Atlanta has proven it can handle world-class events and it doesn’t get much bigger than the World Cup!
