The 2014 Major League Baseball All-Star Game rosters were announced last night. Three players from the Atlanta Braves will join the some of the best athletes from MLB in Minnesota. Closer Craig Kimbrel will make his fourth straight appearance. The very lovable and hugging first baseman, Freddie Freeman, will make his second straight appearance. Last year, Freeman earned the final vote on the National League roster. Stating pitcher Julio Teheran was named to his first All-Star Game. Although none of the Braves players were named starters, appearing in the game is an immense honor. Outfielder Justin Upton is one of five finalist for the final vote on the NL team.
Some notable National League starters include Andrew McCutchen, Troy Tulowitzki, and Yadier Molina. The American League team received some surprising votes. Catcher Matt Wieter was named a starter despite being out for the season. Additionally, some fans were frustrated that Nelson Cruz was elected a starter after being suspended 50 games last season for PED use.
I think 19-year veteran shortstop Derek Jeter deserves the start. The ASG should be about having fun and honoring players like Jeter whom have brought so much value to America’s pastime. Baseball fans across the country have recognized Jeter’s career accomplishments and are paying tribute to him by giving him a proper farewell.
In 2001, I loved when Cal Ripken Jr. was forced to play shortstop in his final ASG appearance. Then “The Iron Man” followed up with this blast:
Derek Jeter, a 5x World Series champion, 5x Gold Glove Award recipent, and 5x Silver Slugger deserves the nod at shortstop. It will be a long time until baseball fans have an opportunity to witness a player with his leadership and passion for the game. “Captain Clutch” is the all-time MLB leader for hits by a shortstop and I will miss watching someone of his caliber.
